about a year ago i purchased the young living essential oil starter kit and to be honest most of the oils have been sitting in the cabinet collecting dust. there are a few that i consistently grab, but i am trying to make more of an effort to broaden my knowledge of my oils and use them more. i would love to eventually transition my family over to only using natural products and while we rarely take medicine i would like our go to remedies for health ailments to be our oils as well (i get headaches a lot and peppermint oil has been my savior!).
with that said i am totally over the winter and the cold; spring and warmth can come any day now. in an attempt to try and brighten my spirits i made a lemon sugar scrub and let me tell you it not only helped exfoliate, soften and freshen up my skin, but the scent alone had me dreaming of sunshine and blue skies and i’ll be honest my mood lifted.
if you don’t or haven’t used a sugar scrub before, start! sugar scrubs are great for exfoliating and moisturizing, they help maintain younger looking skin and are great for preventing acne.
i chose to scent my scrub with lemon essential oil, but really the possibilities for scents are endless! and while the smell alone will make you want to use it there are many benefits of lemon essential oil as well. adding it to your moisturizer can help reduce the appearance of blemishes, it can give hair a smoother and shinier look by adding a few drops to your conditioner and it’s detoxifying and can help rejuvenate tired looking skin. lemon oil is also calming in nature allowing it to help with fatigue, anxiety and stress and has a high vitamin content which makes it a great boost for the immune system (you can even add a drop or two to your water or tea) and it’s perfect as a cleaner because of it’s disinfectant properties.
so now on to the recipe. i didn’t follow the recipe below exactly, but used it more so as a guide. you can play around with the measurements to get the quantity, consistency, color and scent you like.
natural diy lemon sugar scrub recipe
1/4 c. coconut oil
1 c. granulated white sugar
a few drops of food coloring (i used about 3)
10 drops lemon essential oil
1. melt the coconut oil in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
2. pour sugar into oil and mix (if your mixture is too liquidy you can add more sugar until you achieve your desired consistency).

4. add essential oils.
5. store in a glass airtight container.
